- The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) has urged the government to provide ₹1 crore compensation to the families of students who allegedly died by suicide in connection with the NEET paper leak controversy, citing growing distress among aspirants facing uncertainty over the examination process. In an open letter addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke claimed that 11 NEET aspirants had died by suicide over the past week and called for immediate financial assistance for their families. “We demand that your administration release a compensation amount of one crore rupees to all families who have suffered from a suicide due to the compounding crisis of paper leaks,” Dipke wrote. According to the letter, many affected families had invested heavily in their children’s education, often taking substantial loans in the hope of securing a better future. Dipke argued that the examination controversy and the prospect of a re-test had intensified stress among students. The student leader also reiterated his demand for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, alleging a lack of accountability over the examination irregularities. “All that we students want is to see some accountability for the loss of lives,” he said, adding that decisive action was necessary to restore public confidence in the education system. Exam controversy and student distress The appeal comes amid reports of student deaths from several states, including Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Maharashtra and Karnataka. The NEET examination conducted on May 3 was cancelled following allegations of a paper leak and later rescheduled for June 21, affecting more than 2.27 million candidates who had already appeared for the test. Among the recent cases, a 23-year-old NEET aspirant in Dehradun reportedly died by suicide while preparing for the re-examination. According to police, she had an outstanding academic record and was a college topper. In another incident, a 17-year-old student preparing for the NEET re-test died after allegedly falling from the sixth floor of a residential building in Ahmedabad. As the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) continues its probe into the paper leak allegations, concerns are mounting over the psychological toll of the controversy on students preparing for one of India’s most competitive entrance examinations.
