Akali Dal chief Sukhbir Badal, Lok Sabha MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal and a dozen other party leaders were detained this afternoon amid calls for a ‘black Friday march’ to mark one year of nationwide protests against the centre’s farm laws.

Earlier in the day angry farmers, Akali Dal workers and other protesters massed at Delhi’s borders, where police had put up barricades and closed specific roads, and also two metro stations, to stop them from entering the city.

Harsimrat Badal, who resigned as a minister in the union cabinet over the farm laws issue, tweeted saying she “strongly condemned Delhi Police” for stopping protesters from entering the city.

“Strongly condemn Delhi police for sealing entry points to national capital & detaining Akali Dal workers reaching Gurdwara Rakabganj Sahib. Receiving phone calls & videos telling how Police trying to foil protest march to Parl against 3 Farm Laws. It’s an undeclared emergency,” tweeted Harsimrat Kaur Badal.

Delhi Police on Thursday issued a notice to Singh Badal and spokesperson Daljit Singh Cheema prohibiting the party’s protest march from Gurdwara Rakabganj to Parliament on Friday.
