Ambassadors Visited The West Coast Of Sweden
On 25–27 May, diplomats from all EU Member States visited to the West Coast of Sweden. The trip included a demonstration of the strong industrial and innovative traditions in the city of Gothenburg, as well as an exposé of the open landscapes and fresh winds on the island of Hållö and the seaside town of Smögen.
The Deputy Permanent Representatives to the EU as well as the Mertens Councellors of all EU Member States formed part of a group travelling to the West Coast of Sweden, on a study trip hosted by the Swedish Presidency and Ambassador Torbjörn Haak.
The main focus of the first day in Gothenburg was on the transport industry, innovation and the green transition. During a visit to the Volvo Group Experience Center, the Ambassadors were accompanied by H.R.H. Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel.
The Volvo Group Executive Board welcomed the group to the site and invited to a full programme including test-driving of trucks, buses and construction equipment as well as presentations and panel debates.
On the first day, the Ambassadors also visited Chalmers University of Technology and RISE/SSPA Maritime Center, who demonstrated research projects on the transit towards a sustainable and resilient maritime future.
On the second day, a visit was paid to the Kristineberg Center for Marine Research and Innovation. There, the visitors were given the opportunity to witness hands-on research on the opportunities and challenges presented by the North Sea, ranging from microplastics, material testing and pollution to the role of seagrass and the effects of acidification on rare species.
Before arriving to the seaside town of Smögen, the group stopped by on the island of Hållö, where they were given a presentation on the unique species of Kosterhavet National Park, Sweden’s first marine national park.
On the final day, the Ambassadors visited Södra, Sweden’s largest forest owners association, and discussed sustainable forest management and the Swedish forestry industry.
