Union minister Ashwini Vaishaw’s statement on job creation by the central government prompted a sharp jibe from Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) chief and Rajya Sabha member Jayant Chaudhary.

On Tuesday, Vaishnaw, minister for Railways, Communications, Electronics & Information Technology, said that the central government is generating an average of 15-16 lakh jobs every month.

Reacting to Vaishnaw’s remark, Chaudhary tweeted, “Pakode garm hain (fritters are hot),” in an apparent swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s suggestion a few years ago that street food vendors selling fritters should also be considered in employment statistics.

During an interview with Zee News in 2018, PM Modi had said “if someone opens a ‘pakoda’ shop in front of your office, does that not count as employment? The person’s daily earning of ₹200 will never come into any books or accounts. The truth is massive people are being employed.”

Vaishnaw was addressing the Rozgar Mela event at CRPF Group Centre 2 in Rajasthan’s Ajmer where he distributed appointment letters to the newly recruited appointees.

Under Rozgar Mela, PM Modi distributed about 71,000 appointment letters to newly inducted recruits on November 22 via video conferencing. The Rozgar Mela is expected to act as a catalyst in further employment generation and provide meaningful opportunities to the youth for their empowerment and participation in national development directly, according to Prime Minister’s Office.

Addressing the gathering, the prime minister said that more than 71,000 youth are being given appointment letters in more than 45 cities in India which will result in a new era of happiness for so many families.

“You are getting this new responsibility during a special period. The country has entered ‘Amrit Kaal’ (golden period). The people of the country have pledged to make a developed India in this ‘Amrit Kaal’. All of you are going to become the charioteers of the country in fulfilling this pledge,” he told the newly recruited appointees.
