How Safe Is Goa For Solo Travellers

Goa, the sunshine state of India, is perhaps one of the most-loved destinations for beach lovers from across the world. It has been a hippie haven for decades, and has all that it takes for a great vacation.

The big question – how safe is Goa, especially for solo travellers?

The backstory

As loved as Goa is, the brutal rape and murder of Danielle McLaughlin in 2017, and Scarlett Keeling’s sexual assault and subsequent death in 2008 marred the image of Goa. The crimes were heinous and scary, especially for those intending to travel solo.

Should you visit Goa alone?

Yes, because crimes such as these are not limited to Goa or any other place for that matter. The lure of Goa cannot be beaten; making informed decisions and choices, common sense would be your best friends for a safe trip to Goa.

Research, book your stay beforehand

As hip as it may sound, travellers, solo or not, should research and plan their trip well. A safe stay and hosts are of utmost importance, Goa or anywhere. You can choose from a range of stay options in Goa, for the state is home to some amazing B&Bs, cosy homestays, reputed beach huts as well as many reputed luxury hotels.

So yes, read up as many reviews as you can. Do not fall for the lure of on-the-spot booking in hope of a better bargain.

Differentiate between friends and acquaintances

While this life skill should’ve been taught in school, it’s never too late. Most people you meet on a trip, right from your cab driver to the server at a bar are service providers. Acquaintances, if you are a regular customer; and one really should not be hanging out with anyone who isn’t a friend.

Learn to say NO

As impolite as it may feel, a curt and firm no will take you a long way. Vegas or Goa, your safety is a concern in a new land. So yes, say no to any unsolicited advice, party invitations or a simple call for a drink with strangers.

Stay away from substance abuse

For starters, most of the drugs and associated products are illegal in India. So, in case you are hoping to indulge in the same, do know that it’s an illegal act. Of course, being in a new place with no family or friends is not the best time to try it out.

Do not share personal information

Personal information also includes information such as your finance details, hotel address, social media accounts, social security numbers, passport number and more. Do not, even if you make friends on a trip, divulge such information. We don’t know of any friends who need such information anyway.

Listen to your instincts

This is perhaps the most important tip. If you do not like the crowd in a bar, do not step in; if you do not feel comfortable in a party, step out and away; if you feel unsafe in a cab, make an excuse to stop and get down in a crowded place; inform your host and local police if there is anything suspicious or irksome, however petty it seems.
