Have you ever heard about Air Train? Now India is going to have its first Air Train in few years. An air train, often referred to as a Sky Train at many airports worldwide, utilizes an Automated People Mover (APM) system. Its main purpose is to streamline terminal transfers, significantly cutting down the time passengers spend moving between terminals.

India’s first Air Train will be an automated system designed to enhance connectivity between terminals at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI). It is a fully automated train that will continuously operate without stopping.

The Air Train will connect Terminal 1 with Terminals 2 and 3 at IGI Airport, covering a distance of 7.5 kilometers. It will improve inter-terminal transportation within the airport.

The Air Train will have four major stops, serving Terminal 1, Terminals 2/3, Aerocity, and Cargo City. These stops will ensure passengers can quickly move between key locations at the airport.

The project is estimated to cost around Rs 2000 crores, with a completion target set for the end of 2027. Once operational, it will be a significant infrastructure upgrade for the airport.

It is expected that passengers will not need to pay for the ride. Some media sources say that the train service will be available free of charge to all passengers moving between the terminals as Air Trains are Air trains globally are free to use for passengers.

At present, passengers use Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) shuttle buses to travel between terminals. The introduction of the Air Train will save time and enhance convenience for passengers.

With over 70 million passengers using IGI annually, and that number expected to double in the next 6-8 years, the Air Train will help manage traffic more efficiently and improve overall terminal connectivity.
